More Tips:

  • Card must be smaller than envelope
  • For best fit, we recommend a card roughly 1/4 inch smaller than the envelope.
  • If card is too small, it will be “swimming” in the envelope.
  • If we don’t carry a particular card size, we can custom cut cards to meet your requirement.

Envelope Sizing FAQs

How do I know what size envelope my invitation will fit in?

Look for an envelope that is 1/8 – 1/4 inch larger than your invitation card. This will allow enough room for your invite to easily fit inside, but not so much room that the card is swimming in the envelope. In most cases, you can pair A sizes as well. For example, an A9 (5 1/2 x 8 1/2) card fits inside of an A9 (5 3/4 x 8 3/4) envelope.

How to Find the Correct Envelope Size

Are some envelope sizes more expensive to mail than others?

Yes, some envelopes will require more postage than others. The USPS bases postage rates on envelope size, shape, and weight. If you are trying to save money on postage, stay away from square envelopes and vertically addressed policy envelopes (address running parallel to short side), as these fall into the “odd shape and size” postage surcharge range.

Though most rectangular envelopes do not require additional postage based on shape and size alone, their weight may be a factor. Any envelope that weighs over one ounce will require additional postage. We recommend taking one finished ensemble to the post office to be certain each invite has correct postage prior to mailing.

What are the most common wedding invitation and reply envelope sizes?

  • The most common invitation size is A7. This consists of a 5 1/8 x 7 (A7) card and a 5 1/5 x 7 1/4 (A7) envelope.
  • The most common wedding response size is A1. This consists of a 3 1/2 x 4 7/8 (A1) card and a 3 5/8 x 5 1/8 (A1) envelope.

If I don’t see the envelope size I need, can I order custom size envelopes?

Unfortunately, as envelopes are made with specific dies and in quantities upwards of 3000+, we do not offer custom made envelope sizes. However, we do offer the reverse – custom cutting of cards to fit inside of existing envelopes.
