Vice Versa Papers FAQ

Vice Versa Card Stock

Is this a duplex card stock with one color on one side and another color on the other side?
No! This is not a duplex stock but instead 16 distinct colors each having a harmonious color counterpart.

Why the name "Vice Versa"?
The name for this collection comes from the matching light-and-dark shades of color combinations. Pelagus, a deep sea blue, is a perfect match for Rivus, a light icy blue. The rich, dark red of Vinum complements the lighthearted pink called Rosa. The star of this collection is the brilliant yellow Crocum (highly anticipated as a coming-in color). There are eight beautiful pairs in total.

What is the finish and weight of this card stock?
Vice Versa is the latest in fine, textured papers from Gmund Paper Mill. This collection is young, simple and trendy with a soft, subtle Vergé embossing. This heavy weight card stock is 111lb Cover / 300gsm.

What card stock sizes are available?
We offer a wide variety of card stock sizes, including parent sheets and smaller invitation card sizes:
  • 3 1/2 x 4 7/8 (Response Cards)
  • 5 1/8 x 7 (A7 Cards)
  • 6 1/4 x 6 1/4 Square Cards
  • 8 1/2 x 11
  • 27.5 x 39.37

For a complete offering of Vice Versa blank cards, from A4 to A9 and slim sizes, visit our Vice Versa Blank Cards page.

Is this card stock compatible with laser and inkjet printers?
Our Vice Versa papers are recommended for inkjet printing only. We recommend testing a sample on your home printer before placing a full order. The heavy weight of paper may not make it suitable for all inkjet printers.

Is this paper suitable for all printing processes?
Gmund Vice Versa is generally suitable for all printing processes. In offset printing good results can be obtained with the ribbed surface. Owing to the compression of the stock, the ink penetrates less into the material. In order to achieve optimal absorption, self-oxidizing inks should be used and delivery piles should be kept to a low height.

Vice Versa is well suited for four-color reproductions. Here, too attention should be paid to careful drying. The paper can be used efficiently for smaller production runs in the fields of desktop publishing; the same applies to photocopying. For matching to the particular type of machine, preliminary tests should be performed using sample sheets.

Special processes such as blind embossing, punching and hot foil stamping lead to very interesting results. The Vice Versa papers are chlorine and acid free, pH neutral and therefore very age-resistant.

Note: Limited inkjet printing with 111lb cover card stock. Heavy weight of paper may not make it suitable for all inkjet printers.

Is this card stock suitable for offset printing?
Yes, it is! For best possible results with offset printing, Gmund typically recommends 54 – 60 1/cm (130 – 150 lpi). In individual cases or for dry offset, line screens of up to 80 1/cm (200 lpi) may be chosen. When using special paper for four-color reproductions, it is important to specially match the lithos to the color of the paper. Proof printing on the selected paper stock is recommended.

Why does curling occur when my invitations come off the printer?

Invitation curling will sometimes happen on printers with paper paths that are not straight through. Many of the printer manufacturers have such models. If curling does occur, one suggestion is to take a stack of the curled invitations, and gently bend the stack back and forth. Generally speaking, this will take the curl out of the cards. If you do have access to a straight path printer, such as Canon, Epson, or Lexmark, I suggest that you use them as a first choice.

What is the appropriate paper thickness for my printer?

With the huge number of available printer models from various manufacturers and the legacy devices in use in homes, this can be complicated question. Here are three ways to judge if a particular weight of paper is suitable for your particular printer

1. Pay attention to our printing recommendations

Based on our testing and data received directly from the mills, we offer printing recommendations for every paper variety that we sell, right on that particular items product page. If a paper is better suited to laser printing as opposed to inkjet printing or vice versa, that will be reflected in our recommendation. If a paper is too thick for most home printers, then we will not recommend inkjet or laser printing. Keep in mind that our results cannot guarantee your results with your particular printer. However, our recommendations offer an educated first consideration.

2. Consult your printers specifications

Compare our papers listed weights with the recommendations found with your particular printer model specifications. If you have misplaced or discarded your printers specifications documents, you may be able to find them online. Search for your printer manufacturer and model followed by the word specifications. Once you have located the document, find the paper specifications section. You can look for keywords like thickness, paper weight, media types, etc. Try to find a range of recommended paper weights that the printer is manufactured to print. You may see two sets of units, pounds and grams. You can then compare that range with our listed paper weights. If you are unfamiliar with either the North American paper weight system or European grams per square meter system, you can learn about it in our article and video, Text Weight Paper,Card Stock Paper and Paper Density Explained.

If your printers documentation does not include a range of recommended paper weights, then you may be able to find out by contacting the manufacturer.

3. Test a sample sheet

Once you have read our printing recommendations and compared the paper weight with your printers range of recommended weights, you can feel confident that you have done your homework. Printing a sample sheet is the final stop toward gaining the confidence that you printer can or cannot handle a particular paper. We offer single samples of all of our papers in home printable sizes for customer testing.

Unless you are experienced with the exact paper brand and line you want to print, before placing your full order, it is always best to first order a sample and test it in your printer.

Can we use a laser printer to print Vice Versa? The paper specifications states limited inkjet but mentions nothing about laser printers.

During our in house tests we found the toner from laser printers did not adhere well to the finish of this card stock. For best printing results we recommend using an inkjet printer. In particular, printers that are top loading or straight back feeding mechanisms are recommended. If unsure we highly recommend testing samples on your printer.

Does Vice Versa textured card stock have a linen finish?

Vice Versa features its own unique ribbed texture with dramatic horizontal lines and lighter vertical lines that repeat every inch. Vice Versa's texture is not comparable to a traditional linen finish.
