Years back, when most invitations were hand engraved, tissue paper was included with invitations to prevent smudging. But most invites these days are made with ink that really isn't going to smudge -- the tissue tradition continues more out of habit than for any other reason.

Envelope seals are not a requirement, although they are a nice touch for formal wedding invitations. Among the many options for envelopes seals, you may opt for an authentic wax seal, an easy-to-apply faux wax seal, a decorative wedding sticker or a simple round envelope seal. 

Ribbons and bows are equally formal and both are more formal than clips. Each option presents its own form of production and its own usefulness.
