Put an End to Cut Off Text
If your printed text is cutting off or printing in the wrong direction, you may have overlooked setting Portrait or Landscape orientation in your software, your print driver, or both. In this article, you’ll learn how to print cards that are vertically or horizontally orientated by choosing the correct setting in your software and in your print driver.
Step 1: Set Up Your Document in Your Software:
When printing on rectangular paper and card stock, you will need to decide if you want to print in Portrait or Landscape mode. Will your card be “tall” (portrait) or “wide” (landscape)? Your decision will impact your document setup in your word processing or page layout program as shown below in these Microsoft Word documents.
If your printed piece will be tall, your document orientation is Portrait.

If your printed piece will be wide, the orientation is Landscape.

Instructions for Microsoft Word:
PC
- Click File > Page Setup
- Click Margins tab
- In Orientation section, click either Portrait or Landscape
Mac
- Click File > Print > Page Setup
- In Orientation area, click either Portrait icon (shown left) or Landscape icon (shown right)

Step 2: Loading the Paper
Whether your paper will be printed in Landscape mode or in Portrait mode, in most situations it is correct to load rectangular paper with the shorter edge first as pictured.
Step 3: Print Driver Setup:
Your printer can print in either Portrait mode (left-right printing) or Landscape mode (top-bottom printing):
Portrait

Landscape

In Step 1, you chose the way you will be printing your paper, so apply the same Portrait or Landscape selection here. Communicate this to the printer by entering your printer driver (specific to your printer make and model):
PC Instructions
- Click File > Print > Properties
- Look for Orientation
- Click either Portrait or Landscape

Mac Instructions
- Click File > Print > Page Setup
- In Orientation area, click either Portrait icon (shown left) or Landscape icon (shown right)
